To Our Supporters (AKA Our Bakers):

Happy New Year! We made it through probably one of the most unexpected years, in so many ways. We hope you and your loved ones are safe.

At the beginning of 2020, I was ready for the upcoming year. we had planned to launch this business since 2018, it's really been a dream come true. But, no one could have prepared us for what 2020 turned out to be. Thank you for being a part of this community, for every purchase, every piece of feedback, every reshare, every recommendation, We appreciate you all.

As an outsider to the natural hair movement until just 2 years ago, and also as someone who started their natural hair journey really late in comparison to the natural hair movement/space, I've always been amazed at how far the movement has come.

And with that, I have a few observations. Launching in November was an accumulation of years of work behind the scenes. I was (and still), really happy to begin this journey of bringing something new to the natural hair space.

The major observation that I found out was that even though the natural hair industry, was born out of the movement where half the name comes from, it had a strong call for inclusivity and acceptance of all hair types, there was a major gap in representation of tight textures. When I mean tight, I mean type 4 hair textures.

Sure, there's been a lot of discovery and conversation around type 4 hair inclusion as these tighter hair textures are less desired in the space, it also wasn't represented in the industry where we buy these products.

You can easily see this with searching any social media with "4c or type 4 natural hair washday" for example. What you see when you search this is a lot of people are claiming to be of a tighter hair texture when in reality they're of a much much looser hair texture. The misleading content is now spilling into the industry.

I'm a type 4 babe myself, 4c to be exact. I understand the frustration with trying to look for content or products that claim to work with kinky and afro hair textures, but this either ends up being an exaggeration or a product that does not do what it says on the bottle. And this where I see an issue.

Taking all of this into consideration, Baked Kurls will now be dedicated to serving people with 4c AKA afro or kinky hair textures. They, (we), have been overlooked in an industry that is partly supposed to serve and include us, and I've been on the receiving end of this. Bearing in mind that 99% of our community have kinky or afro hair, it's no surprise that Baked Kurls is going down this lane of focus.

Even though we have decided to do this, this is not to say that people with looser textures aren't welcome in using our products, we are just focusing our marketing efforts and product development towards a group that has been neglected.

So when will you start to see the push towards 4c hair as a customer? As soon as really, the changes will slowly start rolling out as soon as this is published.

2020 has definitely taught us a lot of lessons. Thank you to the Kurly Community for helping us to niche down even more, and in hopefully doing this, the business can really serve a group that needs some love right now. Let's see what we're in store for 2021, happy new year!🎉

With Love From,

Jessica
